A classic Scandinavian bathroom is a practically designed space for relaxation, inspired by the principles of coziness, simplicity, and a connection to nature. Rooted in the Scandinavian lifestyle of hygge, this design aesthetic blends modern decor with warmth to create a soothing environment that feels like a personal spa. You can turn your bathroom into a cozy retreat this winter by incorporating these Scandinavian bathroom design principles.
I follow a Facebook page (For The Love Of Old Houses) that features real estate listings for old homes throughout the US and the world. Over the last few months, there have been a handful of really charming homes in Scandinavia for sale, which is what inspired this post. All photos in this post are from real estate listings from Scandinavian homes.
Elements of Scandinavian interior design
1. Neutral Color Palette
Scandinavian bathrooms favor soft and neutral hues, such as whites, greys, and beiges. This color palette helps reflect light, amplifying any natural light in a home. These colors may also help small bathrooms feel larger and more open.

2. Natural Light
Natural light is emphasized to create an airy and open feel. Large, frosted windows or skylights are popular features, maximizing light while maintaining privacy. If natural light is limited, mirrors are strategically placed to reflect existing light, brightening the space.

3. Wooden Elements
Light-toned wood, such as oak or birch, is often incorporated into Scandinavian bathrooms for a warm, natural feel, like wooden vanities, shelving, or slatted wood bath mats. These elements add texture and contrast to the space.

4. Clean Lines and Minimalism
Fixtures and furniture are sleek and simple in Scandinavian bathrooms. Floating vanities, frameless glass shower enclosures, and streamlined toilets emphasize the commitment of this aesthetic to maintaining openness and reducing visual clutter in a space. Minimalist layouts ensure every item has its purpose, helping to keep bathrooms neat.

5. Cozy Textiles
Scandinavian bathrooms incorporate soft, tactile elements to create a cozy, hygge-inspired retreat. Plush towels, woven bath mats, and warm, textured shower curtains add comfort and warmth.

6. Biophilic Design
Nature plays a crucial role in Scandinavian bathrooms. Plants like pothos or snake plants thrive in the humidity and bring a fresh, organic feel. Natural stone or wood accents can also enhance the connection to nature.

7. Functional Furniture
Every element in a Scandinavian bathroom prioritizes functionality. Floating vanities often include hidden storage to keep countertops clutter-free. Multipurpose fixtures, like towel warmers or foldable drying racks, save space and add convenience.

8. Earthy Accents
Earthy touches add depth and character to the clean, modern aesthetic. Woven baskets, brick accents, or matte stone tiles are small but impactful details. Handmade decor or textured tiles in warm, muted tones create subtle visual interest.

9. Pops of Color
Scandinavian interior design incorporates pops of color to bring vibrance and warmth to its otherwise neutral and minimalist aesthetic. Small bursts of color help to create visual interest without overwhelming the space. Ornate gold mirrors, plants, vibrant oriental rugs, or colorful textiles are all great options to incorporate into your bathroom design.

By combining these elements, Scandinavian bathrooms achieve a balance between practicality and comfort. I hope these tips and ideas help you recreate these cozy looks in your own home!
