If you want roses that will bloom through the fall, here are 3 that you need to add to your garden!

🌹 Cramoisi superieur - available as a shrub or climber, this rose is a spectacular addition to any garden. In warmer climates, like here in zone 8, it maintains its green foliage throughout the winter and continues to bloom 10-11 months of the year. Mine is blooming more now than it was in the height of summer! This rose can be planted in zones 7-11.

🌹 Champney’s pink cluster - this noisette rose grows rapidly and produces elegant clusters of pink flowers. It can be grown as a pillar rose or as a climber. This old rose was one of the earliest noisette roses. Noisette roses were first bred in Charleston, South Carolina and thrive in this climate. This rose can be planted in zones 6-11.

🌹 Felicia - In addition to its intense fragrance, this rose starts blooming early in the season and continues producing beautiful pink / apricot flowers through the fall. Even during the hottest weeks of summer, this rose is unbothered. It’s a perfect rose to grow on an obelisk or on a trellis. This rose can be planted in zones 6-11.

You may not find these roses at your local nursery. I’ve had great success with roses that I’ve purchased from Antique Rose Emporium and Heirloom Roses so I recommend checking out their websites!

If you’re looking to add color to your garden from late spring through fall, this is your sign to plant hydrangeas!

As the temperatures drop and the blooms on hydrangeas age, their flowers change colors, putting on a spectacular show in the late summer / early autumn.

What causes this change? Anthocyanins - these are the compounds primarily responsible for the pigment in the flowers of hydrangeas. The composition of anthocyanins within the plant is affected by factors such as pH, light, temperature, and stress. This is also the reason we can change the bloom color of some hydrangeas by adjusting the soil pH.

Oakleaf hydrangeas and limelight hydrangeas are great options if you want brilliant autumn color. 🌸🍁

We recently spent some time in Maine because of hurricane Helene and I got the pleasure of seeing my mother’s giant hydrangeas in their full fall splendor.

What has gardening taught you?

It’s taught me to truly appreciate the beauty in small, every day moments.

This was a beautiful sunrise I saw back in May. It was on my grandfather’s birthday - the first one where I couldn’t wish him a happy birthday.

I started working before the sun came up that morning and noticed a glimmer of pink light through the crack in the blinds. I walked outside to the most beautiful sunrise. The garden was bathed in warm light, the birds were singing, and the fragrance from the gardenias and magnolias lingered in the air.

As I looked around at the beauty that surrounded me, I realized that the sadness that I’d carried outside with me had lifted. I felt so comforted to have had the opportunity to enjoy something so incredible.

If you want color in your garden this fall, here are 3 beautiful shrubs to add to your yard!

🌿Snowball viburnum - these are a great alternative to white hydrangeas! They tolerate a range of growing conditions. Mine are planted in full sun. However, I’ve seen some near me that are planted in deep shade and still bloom. Snowball viburnum are generally hardy in zones 3-8. A typical mature height is around 8’, but can grow up to 15’ if conditions permit.

🌿 Encore azaleas - rather than just blooming in the spring, these azaleas bloom again in the fall! These azaleas are typically hardy from zones 6-10. Mine have started their fall bloom now and continue blooming intermittently through early winter.

🌿 Gardenias - my August Beauty and Frostproof gardenias both bloom again in the fall too. These gardenias have an incredible fragrance and can be grown in full sun. Frostproof gardenias are hardy down to zone 7, while August beauty gardenias are only hardy to zone 8.

What’s blooming in your garden in August?

🌹 Our roses are blooming again! And so are our gardenias and azaleas.

🌸 When it comes to selecting plants for the garden, I usually try to choose reblooming varieties to take advantage of the long growing season here in South Carolina.

🌷 We planted vincas in this raised bed three years ago. Vincas are annuals in zone 8, but these come back from seed every summer and multiply each year.

Also, the text on the video says early August because I made the video two weeks ago, but never got around to posting it 😅
