Ideas for Timeless Checkerboard Floors
Choosing a design for your floors can be difficult because you want to balance price, durability, and aesthetics. We realized this when we replaced the floor during our sunroom renovation! As we are in the process of updating our entryway, flooring is on my mind again – specifically, checkerboard floors. Why? Checkerboard floors are a classic that has withstood the test of time, remaining very popular to this day.
It is my goal with this site to share tips for creating an elegant and timeless home on a budget. That being said, I thought it would be fun to start a series of posts showcasing elements of classic design you can include in your home for sophisticated and enduring appeal. One of these elements of classic design is, of course, checkered floors.
With that in mind, keep reading to see the most beautiful rooms with checkerboard floors and learn how to incorporate this classic look in your home.
What type of flooring can you use to create checkered floors?
Marble or Stone Tile
White and black marble floors truly go with every type of décor from traditional to modern. By choosing classic, versatile flooring you will save money in the long run because you will not need to replace it every time you change up your décor.
Porcelain or Ceramic Tile
Colorful, ceramic or porcelain tiles are perfect in a small space like a bathroom. They are both durable and more resistant to stains than their natural stone counterparts.
Wood
You can achieve the checkered floor look with wood as well. To do so, create stencils on the floor with painter’s tape and either stain or paint each square with alternating, contrasting stain or paint. Paint or stain may wear unevenly with time so you will likely find yourself repainting or restaining them in high traffic areas.
