Jasmine Trellis Tips
Here’s what you should know about growing jasmine
Jasmine is a rapidly growing vine that produces elegant white flowers in the springtime. It has an incredible fragrance so it is a wonderful option to plant near outdoor living areas. Star jasmine, which is what is planted in my garden, is evergreen in warmer climates, and will thrive in zones 8-10. Its vines can quickly grow up to 20ft, with proper support.
Jasmine is easy to train to grow along a trellis, making it a great option for fast privacy or coverage. Growing jasmine on a trellis is a perfect way to add lush green foliage and fragrance to your garden, but it requires some care and attention to thrive.
Where to plant your jasmine
Choose a sturdy trellis that can support the weight of the jasmine vines as they grow. Select a sunny location with well-drained soil for planting, as jasmine prefers full sun.
Start your jasmine trellis with small plants. Space the vines evenly along the base of the trellis and water thoroughly to help establish the roots. Provide regular watering during the growing season, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. I have mine on drip irrigation.
Training jasmine to grow on a trellis
As it grows, train the vines to climb the trellis by gently tying them to the support structure using soft garden twine or plant ties. Ensure new tendrils are growing in the correct direction. Redirect any that are not by pruning them or tying or wrapping them in the correct place. Be sure to untangle any vines that wrap around each other or other plants. The more they grow, the harder it will be to untangle them!
Prune jasmine regularly to encourage bushy growth and remove any dead or damaged branches. Only fertilize jasmine in the spring, if necessary, with a balanced fertilizer like 10-30-10. It can be easy to overfertilize so proceed with caution.
We decided to create a jasmine trellis along our old garden wall to cover a large hole where a tree had fallen through it years ago. The wall was not very attractive to begin with and a repair would have been costly so we thought this could be a good compromise. You can see before pictures of the wall in this post.
Now, one year later, the hole is barely noticeable, and the wall is much more aesthetically pleasing. So, if you’re thinking about adding some jasmine to your garden, this is your sign to just do it!
