Week 1 | Week 2
Thank you for joining me on the journey to complete our guest bathroom renovation in the next eight weeks for the One Room Challenge! If you’re new here, I’m Sasha. My husband, Matt, and I purchased our turn-of-the-century Victorian home almost two years ago, and we have been slowly renovating it ever since.
In case you missed them, my previous posts are linked at the top!
Accomplishments
You may remember my indecision over whether to add another row of tiles to the shower wall. To my husband’s dismay, I decided we should go for it! We were both tired of tiling but, in the end, I thought I would regret not adding another row. We are so glad we did. The ceilings in this small room are already high at 10ft, but the additional row of tile really emphasizes this height.
Before & After – Additional row of tile
Unfortunately, we were four bullnose tiles short. Therefore, we were unable to completely finish the bullnose. We ordered more today so it should come within the next two weeks. Setting the bullnose proved to be more challenging than it looked – we had to add the tile from the ceiling to floor so that we could more easily line up the spacing pattern with the top row of tiles. This meant that we were fighting gravity and had to tape the bullnose tiles to the wall while they set.
Last night, we grouted almost all of the tiles. We are holding off on grouting the bullnose until we can add the remaining few we need. I put up my one finished sconce shade for the photo. I am planning on posting a tutorial for making them yourself after I finish the second one!
Indecision has struck me yet again – we used light grey grout, but now I’m debating recoloring it dark grey for a higher contrast look. What do you think?
Since we have finished tiling (not counting the four lower bullnose!), I scheduled the tub and sink to be refinished next weekend. They are both well over 100 years old and could use some TLC to bring them back to their former glory.
This Week’s To-Do List
Here is a brief snapshot of this week’s to-do list!
- Install crown moulding
- Install shower fixtures
- Source door knob
- Order sink drain
- Confirm feasibility of cover for hole in floor
The hole in the floor is where the old drum trap for the bathtub was. We needed to remove it when we replaced the plumbing and have just lived with the hole in our floor ever since. I began researching solutions this week. It would be difficult to patch the circular hole in the heart pine floor so it seems that our best route would be a cover.
Here is the cover I am currently eyeing.
We have brass and porcelain doorknobs throughout the rest of our house so I think I will replace the damaged one in the bathroom with a similar looking one, like this.
I will be sharing more throughout the week via Instagram stories so please join me there as well. Make sure you check out the other One Room Challenge participants here. Good luck to everyone with your renovations.
See you next week!
