Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3
Thank you for joining me on the journey to complete our guest bathroom renovation in the next eight weeks for the One Room Challenge! If you’re new here, I’m Sasha. My husband, Matt, and I purchased our turn-of-the-century Victorian home almost two years ago, and we have been slowly renovating it ever since.
In case you missed them, my previous posts are linked at the top!
Accomplishments
Our biggest goal was to install the shower fixtures over the weekend. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Even though the pipe fittings are recessed the correct distance behind the tile, the escutcheons that came with the shower system protrude too far, preventing leak-tight connections with the faucet. We ordered some shallower ones. Hopefully that will remedy the problem!
Despite the shower fixture set back, we did manage to get all of the crown moulding and baseboard reinstalled. We are always careful to remove any trim intact so that we can reinstall it rather than purchasing new trim. I am currently in the process of painting the moulding Somerville Red and the walls and ceiling New London Burgundy. We have what are known regionally as Hitchcock ceilings throughout most of our house. The ceilings are laid out with moulding in a grid (shown below). I am painting the grid lines the same color as the trim and the inner squares the same color as the walls.
When using deep paint colors, like the ones I’m using with LRVs of less than 20, in a small space, white ceilings can be a stark contrast. Painting the ceiling the same color as the walls, can give the room the illusion of additional height and dimension. Benjamin Moore’s website now gives the LRV for each paint color. If you are using paint from another brand, you can use Encycolorpedia to determine the LRV for your paint color!
Back to the subject of this week’s accomplishments – I ordered new hardware for the door and windows, a new vent cover, a sink drain, and a cover for the hole in the floor. This felt like a great accomplishment to me. I often struggle with decision paralysis so it can take me months to place an order. I feel as though the One Room Challenge is helping me in that regard because I have been forced to make decisions.
Refined Vision
Our accomplishments this week, although they seem minimal, have helped refine my vision for this room. I created the draft below to help translate my ideas to an image. The painting in the image is a generic one from Google. I still need to source some more art for the room and have a piece that I already own framed and matted. I would like to find a landscape, with lots of blues and greens to coordinate with the fabric in the room.
This Week’s To-Do List
Here is a brief snapshot of this week’s to-do list!
- Finish painting
- Source art
- Order rug
- Reinstall toilet (it had to be removed to reinstall the baseboard)

I will be sharing more throughout the week via Instagram stories so please join me there as well. Make sure you check out the other One Room Challenge participants here. Good luck to everyone with your renovations.
See you next week!
