If you’re new here, welcome! I’m Sasha. My husband, Matt, and I purchased our Victorian home about two and a half years ago. Since then, we have been renovating and decorating it slowly, while trying to maintain its historic charm. I have been following the One Room Challenge for inspiration since we moved in, so it was a thrill to participate for the first time this spring when we tackled our guest bathroom renovation! For this One Room Challenge, we will be finishing our sunroom. I will be sharing the progress on Instagram as well as here. Today’s post will focus on getting the look for less to stay within budget and the time constraints of this project.
Week 1 | Week 2
This Week’s Progress
This week has felt like Christmas because I received both the rug and matching lamps for the sunroom!
Now I need end tables to put the lamps on…
I found some on Facebook Marketplace this afternoon that are the correct dimensions and am going to see them in person later this week. Every other set I’ve seen on Facebook Marketplace recently has already been sold by the time I’ve inquired about them so I hope these work out.
While I typically try to get as much as I can secondhand from places like eBay or Facebook Marketplace, it is not always possible to find what you want in a certain timeframe. Here are some items I am purchasing new, or plan to purchase new, compared with their more expensive counterparts.
Lighting – Get the Look for Less
The pair of lamps I bought for the sunroom can be purchased here for under $150! As much as I love the look of the Visual Comfort Lamps, I can’t justify spending over $1,000 for a pair of lamps.
In my experience, less expensive lamps tend to come with less attractive shades. However, a shade is an easy swap. I still haven’t made a decision as to the fabric I want to use for these shades yet. I think I would like to go with something blue or pink to coordinate with the colors in the sofa. What do you think?
Here is a post with tips and a video I made for the last One Room Challenge to help you make your own pleated shades.
Area Rugs – Get the Look for Less
Kai and Ermen may have been even more excited to unwrap the rug than I was!
This is the first new rug I’ve purchased for our home – all of the other ones have been vintage / antiques. I purchased it through this seller on eBay that sells rugs with defects. This one was described as having “loose threads.” However, I have yet to notice any obvious defects. I paid $115 on eBay for it and it is currently sold for $248 here. Even at full retail price, it is still less expensive than this similar rug sold by Pottery Barn.
It’s amazing what a rug can do to pull together a space! Here is what it looked like right before the rug went down.
Accent Tables – Get the Look for Less
I stumbled across the gorgeous image of an entryway above and realized that it contained many of the elements I would like to include in my sunroom design. One of these elements is the garden stools. I saw two at a local antique store recently, but when I went back to purchase them, they had already been sold. That kickstarted my search for similar ones. I plan on purchasing two of these, which are less than $100 each. Here is a similar one that is over $300.
Remaining Tasks to Accomplish
- Reupholster remaining 3.5 chairs
- Sew curtains
- Source, purchase, and install curtain rods
- Purchase and install wall shelves for plants

I love the fact that you are reusing and repurposing so much and not just buying everything new.
