Doorknobs, drawer pulls, window latches, and hinges were all things I took for granted before moving into my Victorian home. These are all utilitarian in nature so does form really come into play as much as function? The Victorians would certainly say so! They used hardware as jewelry to adorn their homes. The people of that era loved ornamentation so much that they even created intricate, carved hinge plates. When was the last time you even paid any mind to one of your hinge plates?
Whether you live in an older house or a new build, hardware is an easy way to add some additional character and shine to your home! There so many great sources.
This is another shot of the stunning room by Helen Davis Design that I featured in this post.
If you are looking for antique hardware, eBay or salvage yards are a great option; you can often get an assorted lot for a low price. There are also vendors that sell reproduction antique hardware. Reproduction hardware is great because you can get the vintage look, but you are not limited by the amount available in a specific lot. However, craftsmanship today can come at a steep cost.
If you are looking for a more modern look, there are many amazing sellers on Etsy. There are also online retailers that sell hardware in bulk for a lower cost.
Reproduction
Here are some examples that caught my eye recently.
I have these throughout my house. I had been looking for a replacement for several that have been damaged over the years so I was delighted to find this replica.
I’ve been thinking of adding something like this to my closet doors.
Modern
I was highly considering purchasing these for our kitchen. Unfortunately, they didn’t work with our style of cabinets. However, the next time I have a project these would work for, I will definitely be purchasing some!
Antique
If I can’t get the layers of old paint off the dutch bolts on the french doors in my living room, I would love to purchase something like this as a replacement.
This entire lot of vintage door knobs and backplates is going for just under $30! Adding “lot” to your search on eBay is a great way to find amazing bulk deals like this one.
